Weldon Owen

About Us

Weldon Owen creates high-quality illustrated children’s non-fiction & family reference books for the international co-edition market. It is part of Bonnier Publishing Ltd., and based in Dorking, Surrey, UK.

Founded in 1984, Weldon Owen has sold over 80 million books, in over 40 countries, and in more than 25 languages. For thirty years, it has been one of the leading players in the international co-edition market, and is valued by its publishing partners for its uncompromising quality and excellence in editorial and design.

In a typical year the company publishes around 25–30 new titles, and now has a backlist of around 1,000 titles. It is not uncommon for a title to remain in print for 10 or more years, and many series have sold several million copies. The company creates and owns virtually all of its content, and has built a substantial content library of over 50,000 images.

A brief history

Weldon Owen was founded in Sydney, Australia, in 1984 by Kevin Weldon and John Owen. In 2006, the company was acquired by Bonnier AB, a family-owned media group based in Sweden with over 200 years of history in publishing. Bonnier has annual international book sales of around £600m, and is by that measure one of the top 20 publishers in the world.

Weldon Owen was subsequently split into two constituent parts: Weldon Owen Publishing became part of the UK-based Bonnier Publishing Ltd, operating from Sydney, Australia; while Weldon Owen International became part of Bonnier Corporation (USA), operating from San Francisco, USA.

In January 2012, the Weldon Owen Publishing business was moved from Sydney to London, UK. In January 2014, the business was moved from London to Dorking, Surrey, in order that it could operate from the same premises as other Bonnier Publishing subsidiaries, including the Autumn Group and Templar Publishing.

In September 2015 it became part of Kings Road Publishing, a subsidiary of Bonnier Publishing and is now based in Chelsea.

Imprints

Weldon Owen’s books are typically sold on a co-edition basis or under license to publishers throughout the world, or are developed exclusively in partnership with a publisher or retailer to meet the needs of their market.

The company publishes in the trade under the imprints Weldon Owen Publishing (UK), Little Bee (North America), and Red Lemon Press (UK and North America).
